Yep, I have been living in Australia for 20+ years and am always amazed at how boring German houses look. As if time stands still. Simple terraced houses in Australia look nice from the outside. To be fair, one has to say that in our country and the USA you can build quite freely. There are guidelines like 2 floors, though.

But as I read here in the forum, every extra corner/bay window is dismissed as a waste of money.

In DE, however, the living quality is significantly better, the standard much higher. At least in my country, nobody worries about the technical side of construction. No one cares, whether the house costs several million or just a few hundred thousand. It has to be big. No one cares what kind of stone the hut is built from (there is hardly a choice anyway) or how well/poorly it is insulated. People just turn the aircon up a bit more.

And is that supposed to be desirable?

Apart from the fact that the conditions are completely different, whether it is the climate, legal requirements, construction costs or follow-up costs (energy).

That is the difference and that’s how I know it from Canada

We build differently. More solid, higher quality, more energy efficient
Every bay window and every gable is a money eater.

No one here would want an uninsulated floor
A whirlpool, when it’s on, makes the whole house shake
Shower cabins or tubs made of fiberglass
Faucets without a mixing valve
Electrical installations etc.

Fitting a room layout into 150 sqm is harder than into 300 sqm. With 150 sqm, a bay window has to add value.

If we were allowed to nail away here like Conny, some houses would look different. Although many housing developments in the USA and Canada look boring too.
Different, more playful and still uniform

I once lived in Berkeley, there is no winter there (and in summer often fog, so not too hot either), of course you have to worry much less about thermal insulation etc. The place felt like it was made of particle board, when the fridge turned on, the lights flickered, there were gaps under the exterior doors for the ants and for air exchange, because the gas stove had a pilot light burning all the time since the typical American is too lazy to light it, you stood directly in the living room, the sliding windows were barely openable because they jammed... and this is a wealthy city and the rent was extremely pricey. In return, there was a lemon tree in the front yard. Different countries, different customs, the buildings must also fit the climate, the typical local storms etc. Drawing inspiration, yes, but still adapting to "German" conditions.

I am always amused when I watch Joanna and Chip (Fixer Upper) tearing down the walls. Everything is cardboard in Amiland, I always think to myself. They should come over here sometime. They would be bankrupt immediately because just the demolition, disposal including structural analysis and approval procedures takes half a year. Sorry, Alro, for cluttering the thread here.

And I always get cold feet at the thought of having just a few wooden slats as a floor.

Although ventilation can make sense.

Apart from that, some things can certainly be implemented by us as well. Even if it's the barn doors that Chip and Joanna install. By the way, there are no more new seasons. They stopped with child number 5.

@TE look at what you really like and try to implement it. Interior design allows quite a lot, floor plans too, outside you just have to see what the development plan permits and what is affordable.
