Are our houses in Germany really so poorly prepared against weather events? I don't think so, when I think of those American wooden shacks that fly away completely in every storm. As shitty as climate change is, I don't worry about my house for now. I stand by this: building insurance and that's it, in the sense of a house building forum.

yes, I admit it *lol I plead guilty to going off topic ;)
I just think it belongs together. Because it has to do with being human / human characteristics.
To improve healthcare, of course, it requires not only more money but significantly better working conditions – by the way, in NRW the staff at all university hospitals have been on strike for about 2 weeks now and nobody cares let alone is big reported about it at all.

But to get back to the climate:

yes, we also built, after all "only" a semi-detached house. Of course, we also don’t need 145 sqm for 3 people.
What do we do as compensation, I’ll just list randomly:
- House: clinker bricks and no WDVS Styrofoam stuff, solar on the roof and now also photovoltaic
- whenever possible bike instead of car, if car then combine several trips
- grocery shopping locally before organic, bring own containers when possible, little meat
- shopping otherwise: clothes as sustainable as possible, generally no unnecessary stuff
- nature-friendly garden with meadow
- we don’t fly
-

I think we are storm-proof already, tornado-proof rather not and we don’t have a basement either. Yesterday I already said we’d need a bunker in the garden – and I’m not exactly sure how much of that was a joke

I'm also not convinced by massive amounts of polystyrene, and this is not meant as an attack, but are clinker bricks really more environmentally friendly? After all, in addition to the insulated wall, you still have to fire tons of clinker bricks with high energy consumption. And even if the facade supposedly lasts forever, does the house itself last that long? There are plenty of houses that are already being demolished after 50-70 years.

You are completely right about that - bricks are only worth it if the house stands for a long time or they are reused. There are already projects like that, but so far rather few and also more expensive due to the cleaning effort. Hopefully that will change someday... Our two concrete ceilings could also have been made more climate-friendly out of wood - but the man just didn't want that. No one is perfect at everything. Everyone should just contribute what they can, that would already be a big step.

Is wood really more climate-friendly? It usually doesn't come from the forest around the corner

Concrete is indeed very, very climate-unfriendly. We once watched a documentary about cement production. It wasn't very pleasant.
