The wall suddenly smells like marijuana and stale beer.

You wouldn’t believe where mice can get to and what they are capable of. We used to live together with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law in an old multi-family natural stone house with very thick walls. Since a large part of it had been empty for a long time, the mice really felt at home and spread out. The mice managed to carry walnuts up inside the natural stone walls, rolled them along in the cavity floor, brought them up behind our cabinet wall, and then cracked them under our cabinet wall. We almost went crazy because we thought they were gnawing the cabinets. We then set traps everywhere in various vacant areas including the basement and attic and emptied them at least twice a day. The record was 9 mice in one day. After half a year of intense hunting and over 300 mice killed, we had decimated them enough that we hardly noticed them anymore.

Hello everyone,
thanks already for your information and the pictures. Yesterday, in the living room under the floor-to-ceiling windows, I covered the area from which the smell flows inside with foil and tape and additionally placed two animal repellent devices outside on the terrace in front of the windows. Unfortunately, it didn’t help at all. When we stepped this morning from the bedroom into the living/hall area, the smell was just as strong as in the days before. Now (at noon), when it is drier and warmer, the smell is gone and you can air out without the smell returning after half an hour.
I am still searching further. The next step would be, as with you, to remove the terrace slabs outside. But they are made of stone and have been there for over 30 years. Probably nothing will happen before Easter. But it is indeed strange that the smell – if it really is mice living under the terrace and under the windows, just like with you, Stefanie – penetrates so massively into the interior of the house. We do have floor-to-ceiling windows at that spot, but they cannot be opened. The terrace door is much further forward; there is no smell there. That is why my idea was that sealing all the cracks at the window should minimize the smell. We also hung construction tarps in the house during construction work (removing the old oil heating system) which not only significantly reduced the construction dust but also the smell of heating oil, etc. That is why my hope was that the "Marihuana-Geruch" would also be reduced by this.
Stefanie, is the smell completely gone at your place now? And the mice as well? What are you currently using to combat it?
Best regards!

Hello!

So, I really wouldn’t have thought that something like that could seep in so much. My windows are triple-glazed, well installed, and only a few years old.
But it was exactly like with you...

Now it still smells a little of the vinegar I sprayed, but no longer of mice! Woohoo!
No mouse has yet fallen into the trap; maybe at least it has temporarily moved out.

Great that the smell is finally gone at your place! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way!!! By the way, last night I taped another spot under our windows with foil. And this morning the smell was gone!! I also poured apple cider vinegar in front of our windows on the terrace. However, it doesn’t smell like vinegar INSIDE the house at all, strangely enough, even though our windows are already 30 years old and there is always a slight draft under the windows. However, the weather was warmer and drier yesterday, so the smell is generally better for us then. I’m continuing to observe and am curious. But it’s strange that no mouse has been caught in your trap yet.

A little update on the mouse hunt... There was an animal at both ! Snap traps, since the Nutella is less and the cheese is gone but none of the traps were triggered. There is also a slight smell again. So the peppermint oil doesn’t help either. Vinegar seems to have more effect, but I can’t spray it under the veranda anymore (it’s put back together again). I have now ordered a better live trap and am hoping for the best.
