The wall suddenly smells like marijuana and stale beer.

Please excuse the late reply, we were only able to take down today... yes, we have identified the culprit or rather found its nest made of my dog's hair, lots of nutshells, and mouse droppings. I had already set a trap in the last few days, but the beast actually escaped from the live trap (there was only a cheap one left...). So unfortunately, it lost its chance at life, but it hasn't fallen into the "kill trap" yet. Keep trying... I cleaned everything as much as possible in the split today - sprayed with vinegar (according to the internet, this is supposed to help) - and hope that it either leaves or eventually falls into the trap. The only way I can explain the smell stopping in summer is that it moves out because it gets extremely hot under the WPC and the veranda roof in summer... Or does anyone else have another idea? Spring residence... Ha ha! Many thanks again to you tipsters and fellow enthusiasts! I hope you now also figure out where the culprit is hiding! Definitely let me know!

So are they actually mice? I never would have thought that because mice usually "smell" different… well, at our place there is definitely a tenant at night who nibbles. But I wouldn't have thought that the smell comes from a family of mice. Fortunately, they will move out again soon, then we hope it stays quiet for the next year. The funny thing is that it is always exactly the same time of year. Let's see.

Hello Stefanie D. and Käsekrümelchen,

we have been living in our house (rented) for eight years and have the same problem. It smells particularly strongly of marijuana in spring (sometimes also reminiscent of beer, but very pungent and unpleasant). The smell appears in our living room. It somehow comes from the floor or under the floor. We have wooden floors (oak country house floorboards). The smell comes from the corner in the area of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Since we have an open floor plan, the smell spreads throughout the house and it is so disgusting. After airing out, it comes back immediately. We mostly have the smell in the evening, at night, and in the morning. From about 1 p.m. it gets less and starts again around 8 p.m. We already had the problem three and four years ago. It always comes in spring (starts between February and April) and goes away after three to four weeks. I suspect that it has something to do with moisture seeping somehow into the floor or under the screed. Actually, we would have to remove the floor covering in those spots to see if something is rotting or leaking, but we live in a rented house, so that is difficult. Our landlord doesn’t take care of it and portrays us as overly sensitive. Right outside the window (outside) is our terrace. However, we always sometimes find small black droppings there, which could be from mice. Therefore, I am not sure whether the smell is caused by moisture seeping through leaks under the screed or under the wooden floor, or if it comes from mice living under the floor. Earlier I covered the spots where the smell was coming from (as far as I could locate it) with foil and tape, hoping that the smell will no longer flow so strongly into the room. Let’s see if it gets better now. I’m interested in your further experiences. Later I will set up animal repellent devices in front of the windows of the affected spots (so on the terrace), let’s see if it helps. Keep me updated!

Best regards

For us it’s also always at the same time. Summer, autumn, and winter we have complete peace. Inside the house you don’t see anything, no mouse traces, just the smell. I haven’t heard any noises in the living room yet. We also don’t have pets. Interestingly, we didn’t have this problem last year and the year before, but we did in the four years before that as well. I had – because it always occurs in spring and goes away in continuously warm, dry weather – so far the impression that it has something to do with moisture or the groundwater level. We also had it once in mid-summer when it rained heavily for weeks.

Yes, they are mice! I wouldn’t have thought that either since it comes back every year at the same time. Apparently someone moves in there. For now everything is fine except that the vinegar smell still seeps in now and then. I am now trying everything possible to keep the critters away... I will report whether peppermint oil helps.

I find moisture only in spring a bit strange considering the number of rainy days in the year. Also, our daughter’s room is upstairs, while downstairs nothing smells in the room below. We have a half-timbered house with drywall walls. So mice cannot be ruled out. They have already helped themselves a few times in my pantry, where whole bags of pasta were completely eaten. Inside the house itself, I have not yet found any droppings. But that something is there is sometimes unmistakable at night or in the early morning hours. It scratches and rustles again and again. This year, it is also up in the very top attic space (the attic fully converted) in the bedroom. But I can’t get to it there because it is directly under the ridge. At my daughter’s (house in L shape) there is a crawl space, but no one gets me up there, which is also above our son’s room (nothing smells there) and also above the hallway. It never smells there or in our son’s room. Only in the back, by our daughter. It doesn’t stink either or have a terrible odor. Just strange, as if something is “blooming.” As suddenly as it comes, it also goes away.
