The wall suddenly smells like marijuana and stale beer.

That is certainly mice at your place too if you already see the droppings. They lived for me directly under the floor-to-ceiling veranda door by the wall. There it obviously penetrated extremely. Along the entire house wall under the veranda they lived and under the stone plates that lie every meter are their tunnels. It sounds the same to me with you. Keeping my fingers crossed and please let me know what you hopefully succeeded in repelling them with. Best regards

So mice really do live with us now and then, we know that. But I don’t know that they spread such a smell. I once had mice and rats and the stench from the cage is not comparable, it was really disgusting. But that smells completely different. Maybe we really have to open the little hatch to the crawl space ‍ I don’t even want to know what awaits us there.
In 15 years, this is now the 4th year

I also wouldn’t have thought it could stink that much and almost permeate the whole house. I also know it differently from mice in a cage. But outside it might also be the sheer amount where they keep peeing on, and the wall dampens it somewhat or makes it come across differently. Everything was full of droppings, unbelievable...

I’m really very curious what awaits you! Get well prepared already.

Here are a few photos of how cozy the beast has made itself...

So the smell in the cage is definitely worse than this current one. Sometimes it smells less during the day or not at all, and then at some point it gets stronger again. That's what I find so strange. A nest with urine is there permanently and should also smell the same constantly. It doesn't stop in between and then start again.

No, I thought that too, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I guess it always stinks more when she was active there at night and depending on the weather. That's how it was here as well. Only when I sniffed directly outside there did I almost gag. From inside the living room, it was just a smell that was sometimes there, like with you, and then seemed to disappear. Even the mason wouldn't have guessed mice because it was so sporadic yet came back every year.
