Floor-to-ceiling windows - Why floor-to-ceiling windows? Advantages and disadvantages?

We have drawn our existing furniture as well as the kitchen to scale with their surfaces, cut them out, and then placed them on the floor plans of the house to get a first impression of whether it roughly fits.

In many amateur floor plans, it unfortunately "fits" in the sense of "slim fit," whether in terms of hardly variable furniture arrangements or in terms of a barely sufficient circulation space around the double bed.

Floor-to-ceiling windows are generally wrong. It just has to be coherent and fit as a whole.

However, they are less popular with people who have this attitude than with model home fashion maniacs.

For me, these windows are also a design element, but I am more of a Bauhaus fan anyway. For example, I cannot imagine the Barcelona Pavilion by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe or other works without floor-to-ceiling windows.

Only then must there be a coherent window grid in the facade design and not a window-format massacre as already discussed in other places here.

Funny enough, I was just shown an advertisement in this forum decorated with the following image:



Farnsworth instead of Barcelona, but indeed also "unimaginable" with ordinary windows.

It is also inconceivable to build something like that with a 3-meter distance to the neighbor.

We will have 6 floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, 4 of which can be opened to go out into the garden. We plan to place our pool table there, and then I don't care if the neighbors can see it

It feels like living rooms are being equipped with doors to the outside in all directions, even though they won't be usable afterwards. Furniture is placed in front of them inside, and outside there isn't always a terrace or if you step onto the terrace, you immediately stand in the furniture there. You can observe this everywhere in the new housing developments here.

Of course, it doesn't make sense everywhere, but since windows now partly have better insulation values than masonry, it's not only no longer nonsensical, but offers added value without major disadvantages.

Where did you get that rumor from?
A very expensive "passive house window" has a Uw = 0.7 W/(m²K), a usual exterior wall in new buildings has U = 0.2 or even lower (KFW 55/40).
