I think it is more a lack of overview. That I forget things currently happens to me in the 2.5-room apartment just as it did before in my shared flat room. Having a little more space helps me tremendously with keeping track. What I now have in 3 Pax units (so 3 meters x 58 cm), I previously had in a cabinet about 1.20 x 60 meters and had to stack everything on top of and behind each other. Some things automatically ended up in the very back corner and were only seen again at the next major decluttering and cleaning session.
Now most things hang, and I rotate and vary much more than before.
I have also often experienced the issue of "not pursuing hobbies anymore because the stuff is too far away or awkward to handle" in (small) apartments.
Therefore, I am very much looking forward to our house with a basement and a walk-in closet. I cannot even imagine what will happen if we really have two children – I will definitely be happy about every centimeter that is "my area."
At the same time, I (= having moved six times in 32 years, always into relatively small apartments or shared flat rooms) have observed how my dad + stepmother and my little sister (= a generous 25 years in a house with a basement and attic above the four-car garage) had enormous problems fitting everything when moving into a house without a basement. My little sister actually had tearful outbursts because she had to dispose of old school notebooks from elementary school and for the first time had to think about what she wanted to keep. The parents handled it better and held considerable decluttering orgies (also gave away a lot), but that wasn’t enough to fit everything in the new house. Now quite a lot of stuff is still in the old basement, in one half of the four-car garage, and in the attic above, while they "consciously decided to build a house without a basement".... so if you don’t have the luxury of still being able to use the old house partly, you should really reflect well on how much space you need/want before building.
Although I believe that as long as you enlarge overall, you can manage everything. Only downsizing is really difficult.
