Quick question on the side since I am also somewhat involved with the topic and quite impressed with radio solutions so far. Controlling the system with Openhab always requires an internet connection, right, or is a local network sufficient? Of course, if I use voice control with Alexa, that is a given. But does the system otherwise rely on a local or global solution? Otherwise, I am really impressed with your concept, as it also fits me and my requirements. The only thing that still holds me back a bit is the dependence on the internet since here in Saarland we are somewhat like a developing country.

Openhab works, of course, standalone without a mandatory internet connection. Otherwise, the fanbase would be significantly smaller.

Ok, I already thought so. Depending on the binding, you are then somewhat dependent.

You don't necessarily have to buy/use products that want to phone home. It's up to everyone how they set the whole thing up.

Which brings us back to the topic: "Why cut your own throat and rely on DIY solutions?"

But everyone is the architect of their own fortune.

Because you neither cut into your own flesh nor have a makeshift solution.

You keep saying you don’t want a KNX vs rest discussion, but you constantly call everything else a makeshift solution. That won’t lead to a reasonable discussion; it’s just shooting against everything else.

Just a tip: Make regular backups of the SD card.

The best example is the openweathermap binding and the local weather station. I prefer the local station. It costs something, but the data like wind/gusts/solar radiation match the location. Additionally, you are not dependent if it once says "We no longer need the web API" or if the internet goes down and the wind tears apart the blinds.

That is indeed true, and in my opinion also the biggest benefit, but the flexibility is at the same time the risk that after an update of component XY a binding might not work anymore because the manufacturer closes or changes the interface. Then you're stuck. It can happen, you have to be aware of that.
