It's a massive difference whether I need a toilet for 100€ per week for half a year, ergo 2600€, or like the builders we inquired with for 7 weeks at 20€ each... Although I am basically grateful for the hint about hidden costs. But 670k for our construction project seems exaggerated to me. We will not go to the architect, it will probably not be the perfect floor plan, but a "standard" house. I don't think all the other builders lied to me about the manufacturer's cost calculation. We will simply approach our project with a total volume of 500,000€ in the intended way. And I think overall it fits, even if I don't calculate everything down to the last detail. If in doubt, we will sell a part of the land as described... Building land will not become less; I want to try to keep the large property.

Even for half a year of construction time, that makes over 500 bucks. Are travel kilometers included or is that free of charge?

Phew, now that's getting very petty, isn't it?

One question still arises for me. The construction company grants us a "lastenfreies Rücktrittsrecht". This means: The contract is on hold until we confirm by signature that it should start. The right of withdrawal is valid for 12 months. Does anyone have experience with something like this? Is it common? I am a bit skeptical about such a lenient right of withdrawal. In the end, it means that I secure the current prices and can say in 7 months that I don't feel like it after all...

That’s exactly what I meant. If you now plan sensibly and can keep the plot, you can later, when your wife earns more or for old age, divide the land, sell/rent the house, and build age-appropriately or more generously on the subdivided plot. So all options remain open. And as long as you stay under 500k, you would have many options with very manageable risk.
