Yes, I have thought about something like that too. But for now, our children are still too small for it (1 year old, and still in the womb). But later we can very well imagine it. Possibly, I wanted to leave the ceiling open in the bedroom right away. You can do it room by room later on. Then you don’t need a staircase up there at all?

Do you misunderstand us? The slant with the insulation will be covered upwards as well. You don't have to install galleries; you can do it later when you have time and the children need them. Then, of course, you need a staircase to the galleries, just like with a loft bed. I think you have a problem with the concept? (because not conservative?)

Well, my ideas aren’t that conservative after all. I’m only 27. I first saw the thing with the galleries on Sunday in Wuppertal in the show house. I just thought to close the ceilings in the kids’ rooms first and then open upwards if needed and open all the way to the top. Although you’re right, then we have double the work. I have to discuss with my hubby what he thinks about that. It definitely looks nicer! Can you actually leave the roof beams partially exposed then? I mean because of the thickness of the insulation. It’s usually placed between the rafters and then covered with drywall. Or do the beams simply have to be “thicker” so that the insulation fits in between and there’s still air left? We have many new builds among our friends, but none of them are that “modern.” Although now that I think about it, there is one house. *thinking* I have to look into that.

You don’t have to leave the rafters exposed. Usually, you have insulation between the rafters, which (sensibly) takes up the full depth of the rafters. Then, drywall or something similar is installed on top, so you only see the roof slope but not its construction. If you want to keep the rafters visible, in my opinion you can’t avoid (a somewhat more expensive but also better) insulation above the rafters. It’s a matter of taste and budget. I find fully clad much nicer, and it’s also cheaper. By the way, we decided on an open roof structure. I’m curious how it will look.

@One00: Yes, now I’ve googled around a bit and understood. I think the disguised version is more suitable for me as well. The visible wooden beams somehow don’t fit the style, but I can imagine it looking very nice when covered. Only the roof beams, which basically form the attic floor, are left exposed, right, or how do you do it? Do you know what I mean?
