You can use the router for WLAN, but it depends on the location. The utility room is not always central, and the coverage is not always available there.

Ground floor and router. Sort of. It has to be centrally located, then yes. But the phone and internet usually come through the utility room, which in our case is, for example, in the NW corner of the house. Solution. We have fiber optic. From the fiber optic modem, which hangs on the wall in the utility room, I run the signal via network cable to a devolo distributor, which now feeds it into the house's powerline circuit; it basically rides on the 230 volts via the socket and doesn’t interfere at all. In my office, which is completely central, I tap it and position the router there. The PC and the landline phone are connected to it via cable. The router creates a Wi-Fi that I now have strong at the TV, in the bedroom, and guest room, also good on the terrace. The whole setup delivers a real speed of 42,000 on a 50,000 contract according to various speed tests on Chip and similar sites. Enough for me. The router is the Telekom Speedport Smart, a super simple and capable device. Karsten

In your place, I would follow hanse987's suggestion and disable the WLAN on the router (e.g. Telekom Speedport or a FritzBox) and provide the WLAN via the access points. Depending on how you set up the network, you do not necessarily need the router provided by the provider, but can solve it more elegantly. When selecting the access points, we made sure that they are POE-capable. This means that the power supply of the devices is carried out via the network cable, which is necessary anyway. So you do not save a second power outlet in the ceiling. For this to work, the counterpart (your switch in the utility room, where all network cables are connected) must also be POE-capable.

Without wanting to offend you again, this installation in a new building is not the first choice. Such a setup is rather done as a retrofit in existing buildings. A Speedport or a Fritzbox is sufficient for the use case of a pure in-house network, but as soon as you also have network connections in the outdoor area, these devices are no longer enough. You need to work with VLANs (separate networks within your network) so that no one can tap into your outdoor connection and gain full access to your entire network.

In one point I have to disagree with dhd82. In my opinion, when dealing with 1-2 POE devices, one uses a normal switch and so-called POE injectors for power supply. POE injectors are power supplies that are placed between the switch and the POE device. Usually directly after the switch. A POE-capable switch is usually only worthwhile if additional POE devices such as cameras are involved.

: Just post your plan with your wishes.

Good point, with few connections the injectors are completely sufficient.
