I agree completely. I will install one LAN socket each on the ground floor and the upper floor. On the ground floor, it will be placed at the top of the wall facing the terrace, and on the upper floor, at the top of the wall in the middle of the hallway, each for an access point.
Each bedroom will then get a LAN socket just for the TV. The problem here is that the children are 5 & 7 years old and currently don’t have their own TVs or will not have one for at least the next 5 years. So where is the best place to put the LAN sockets? If I "misplan" here, the LAN socket and the 2-3m long LAN cable will be pointless again.
Our bedroom will also have LAN and TV, but more for "value retention," since we do not have or need a TV in the bedroom.
So that makes 6 LAN sockets plus 1 for the basement.
It’s not a huge amount.
What do you think about this setup?
Always place the LAN socket at the window in the children’s room. The desk tends to be placed there so the child has proper natural light for homework. A 2-3m cable is also no problem in the children’s room. The walls are often already quite full anyway.
Otherwise, we always install double sockets. One for the future PC and one for a possible TV/console/whatever else might come. They have to live with that or use a splitter.
In the living room, we have, I think, 6 sockets on the living room wall. So far, almost all are occupied (receiver, console, TV, maybe a sound system later, NAS if I want it there).
In the kitchen, a LAN socket for emergencies. At the fireplace, one for the control unit. In the "office," 3 sockets (printer, PC/laptop, miscellaneous).
I think in total we ended up with about 20 sockets. I have never regretted it. I don’t like too much running around on Wi-Fi. Everything permanent that has a LAN connection gets a cable.
Since we have a bungalow, the network is of course much easier to distribute.
