Your "works quite well" sounds a bit pretentious

With €5,000 left after deducting the house costs, it would also be fatal if it didn't work out

If I had 5k left to live on, I wouldn’t just pay off €2,000

Oh yes, it always depends on the lifestyle, but of course we also pay off more overall. There are special repayments [Sondertilgungen] that we also use generously. But the net household income can also change significantly if only one person is working..

We have a bit more average net per month, pay 1,700 for the house and additional costs. Early repayment is of course possible. But a lot of money also goes away for all kinds of services that first enable us to earn our income and at the same time lead a family life. In addition, the maximum rate has to be paid for childcare, so the thousands just go away.

Only those who move within the income band defined by the regular users are allowed to express themselves freely here in the forum. This band is extremely narrow, usually defined with little tolerance around their own income. If you earn less, you are attacked as self-destructive because you still dare to start the owner-occupied housing project. Generously, it is suggested that you first save about twenty years of equity, and a compulsory desire for at least two children is assumed, no matter what you say.

If you earn more, you are considered detached.

It is the same with us, my wife is self-employed and a lot is reinvested into the business. Besides, when I look at insurances and other payments, this rather large amount quickly disappears.

But we don’t have to complain, that’s clear!

Conclusion: Repayment is ALWAYS to be viewed individually in the context of the entire financial/family situation and in individual cases also determined with the help of advice. There are also offers from the Verbraucherzentrale if you are unsure. They provide advice more independently than banks.
