But that's exactly what's smart. A new building without roller shutters and venetian blinds - that's not smart. Ok, if the budget is gone at the end, fine. Sensibly, today people build future-proof houses that allow solar gains in winter and are bright and cool in summer (so venetian blinds on the south and west, no roller shutters). Together with ventilation with night bypass, the air conditioning is actually unnecessary if you (or the control system) provide good shading during the day. I don't know if you have ever seen a proper venetian blind in action, but when set correctly it’s bright as day inside and at the same time not a bit of radiant heat gets into the house.

And yes, an air conditioner is still an option. These days they cost almost nothing. By the way, in the Mediterranean region, people plan with large eaves and not with loophole windows. Because of a few weeks a year, you shouldn’t ruin the living comfort for the other 49 weeks.

Do what you want, we did it the way we wanted without all that stuff. And it is cool, bright enough, you can look outside, the 140 cm Ikea curtain rod with two ready-made curtains fits on all windows, so you have made them pretty for under 50 per window, if the sun shines, curtain closed, done. The 80 cm roof overhang does the rest. Oh, with floor-to-ceiling windows that would also work, only they are only allowed to be 106 cm wide.

You can. Your little granddaughter, however, cannot.

I find venetian blinds visually unappealing because of the factory look. They are quite useful, but still not completely convincing. I actually find electric roller shutters the best, but they are only available up to a certain size and otherwise look silly.

In general, large window fronts only make sense in very rare cases, just like SUVs for cars. But every Tom, Dick, and Harry needs them because it's trendy. That's just how it is..

Because Tom and Dick don’t know that SUV means "Turnbeutelfahrzeug" in German
