In Kahos' design, I would consider giving up the sliding door in the kitchen in favor of a normal patio door and moving the island to the wall (patio door then between the kitchen unit on the wall at the bottom of the plan and the freestanding peninsula, which then goes to the wall on the left side of the plan). For this, significantly enlarge the sliding door at the dining area on the left side of the plan and remove the wall stub on the left side of the plan between the dining area and kitchen. In my opinion, this creates a nicer sense of space, and since symmetry is not being observed on the facade anyway (which I prefer!), it doesn’t cause any problems there.

Sorry, wouldn't we then be back to the original design? Or I unfortunately don't understand you. I actually found it nicer when the kitchen doesn't feel like just a passageway and appears wider.

Currently we have 3.8m from the back of the sofa to the wall. That fits quite well. I think 4m is a good distance.

That's a bit the crux: finding a good compromise between openness, TV distance, orientation, blocking windows, etc.…

Alternatively, one could bring a straight staircase into the dining area as a room divider to the living area. Especially in "long" floor plans, this is a commonly seen option. Would that be an option? The living area remains relatively calm and secluded, only the dining area becomes a bit more lively as a result. The rooms sometimes become easier to furnish and also more homely.
