We have children running around here aged 6 years and 2 years. When I cook (we have a large open space), I am alternately bombarded with "Mascha and the Bear," "Star Wars" (God, that PewPew is annoying), and Disney princess movies. Interrupted by screaming, squeaking, bickering, and laughter. With one, I sing along devotedly, with the other, I have the urge to shred ice cubes. But I always keep an ear on the children. That way I don’t feel so cut off, the children can reach me anytime. When we have guests, we often stand together in the kitchen and chat or prepare things together. That makes it very cozy. When I sit on the sofa, a wall panel blocks my view of the battlefield. When we have visitors, my husband gets very busy in the kitchen (he has to keep things tidy there). Otherwise, you learn not to be bothered by a dirty plate. And when the children are out of the house, soon it will be the grandchildren who will benefit from an open layout. Oh, and smells go everywhere, by the way. I used to know exactly what my mother was cooking when I came home, even though she stuffed a towel in the door crack.
