Well, I have to say, we will also "have to" spend quite a bit on new furniture. We only had a very small two-room apartment and I almost only have used furniture. We have significantly more space in the house. We ordered the kitchen new to fit the room, that’s almost €12,000 and I don’t think that’s exceptionally good quality. The old couch was completely worn out and hasn’t been replaced yet because we always thought it wasn’t worth it since we were looking for a house anyway and didn’t know if it would fit then. So we also ordered a new couch for €2,500. The old wardrobe (as mentioned, also bought used) won’t survive a move. We still need a new one, but here it might be used again. We had to get new bathroom furniture because the old ones remain in the rental apartment. At the moment, our son only has a bed in the bedroom, in the house he will get his own children’s room which also needs to be furnished. We will have a dining room which we didn’t have before, so we also need a table and chairs for that and so far all the living room furniture is a hodgepodge. Among other things, a their coffee table for €10. That certainly won’t be moving with us! I didn’t buy expensive furniture because I knew I wanted a house and would rather buy everything to match then. I think many people experience it that way. Or that things that aren’t that good anymore but still okay somewhere just haven’t been replaced yet.

For us, it’s both. The sideboards and the desk have even survived since the youth room and were allowed to move again, they still serve as fillers. If you move from 60 sqm to double or triple the size, you are missing a lot of furniture at first. It was unbelievable how empty it was at the beginning, even though the apartment seemed really full!

Some things just didn’t fit anymore. We would have liked to keep the couch, but it didn’t fit the room (yes, we didn’t plan around the couch )

And then, of course, there is the question of whether you just look for something very cheap again when buying new, which you want/have to replace after a few years, or if it becomes a bit more expensive.
If you then also count the kitchen, you quickly reach five digits...

Thanks for the explanation. So you’ve been living with furniture that you only liked "so-so" for about 15 years now? It was completely different with us. When moving out of our parents’ homes and when moving into our shared apartment, we already bought relatively expensive, high-quality items, most of which (for example, the entire dining room set, the couch, electrical appliances, the bed ...) moved with us into the house. Maybe we were just lucky that almost everything fit and was still usable?

We enlarged from an 80 sqm rental apartment to a 110 sqm house and even sold some pieces here and there. On the other hand, we bought some small new things. All in all, expenses and income for furniture more or less balanced out. Except for the kitchen. We bought that from the previous owners. But at a very reasonable price of “only” €5,000 for a huge kitchen less than two years old with brand-name appliances. Including all renovation costs (and there was quite a bit to do), the move into the house has only cost us just under €10,000 so far. Maybe we were just incredibly lucky?

Basically, it doesn’t matter when you spend, say, €20,000 on nice furniture. Eventually, the money is gone, whether at move 1 or move 5. I just wouldn’t have wanted to live with a half-baked setup for so long.

I would never have thought that furniture / furnishings could cost so much....
for us it was about
€19,000 kitchen + pantry,
€2,000 washing machine + dryer,
€3,500 wardrobe (carpenter)
€7,000 dressing room (16 sqm room, built-in cupboards fitted to the sloping ceiling - carpenter)
€4,000 sofa
€7,000 wall unit (oak)
€1,500 kitchen equipment (cutlery, glasses, cups, Tupperware (OMG... so much Tupperware)
€5,000 everything for the baby at once
€2,000 curtains
€1,500 workbench
+ heaps of small stuff

Of course it can also be done much cheaper!!!
But I don't think we bought VERY expensive furniture (except for the dressing room + wall unit)

What use is the list to anyone now? Nice that you furnished everything completely for just €50,000, but as you yourself say: you can easily spend twice as much if you want. Or only half or even less. Modular systems for the dressing room are available at Ikea for €700 complete instead of €7000 like in your case. Everyone just has different priorities.
