Hello community!

We are heading towards moving in the summer.
We will temporarily stay for 1 year in a very old house until our new own property is ready.
The house is family-owned but will probably not be renovated by us and will eventually be sold, which is why none of us want to invest much money in it.
Still, the situation as it looks right now in the small bathrooms is something I couldn’t live with – not even for a year.
So for me, this is the day I will start doing some DIY work. It’s a good project to try things out because it can’t get much worse than it is. ;)

My question to you: Who has experience or tips on visually improving very old bathrooms with a manageable budget?
Our wish is to repaint the bathtub and at least paint or apply foil to the tiles on the wall.
On the floor, I would like something in wood look – maybe vinyl could be laid over it?
But those are just rough ideas. I am grateful for any input and inspiration.

This is only 1 of 2 bathrooms. This will probably be our "WC"; the shower/bathtub will rather not be used there. There is another bathroom of the same size, from which I currently have no photos, where the sanitary fittings are disgustingly curry brown. I would like to recolor the sinks there as well but have no idea if that’s possible.
We will probably have both toilets replaced before moving in.

Last but not least:
This old kitchen shall become our laundry room. Now we would need to somehow connect a washing machine where the sink is today. Is that doable? The functionality of the sink doesn’t necessarily have to be preserved but it would be nice to have. If yes, what would we have to do and get for that?

I would keep the wall tiles and go retro. Just a new floor, walls white. Or paint everything with chalk paint if you only use the bathroom briefly anyway, then the durability is okay. After two years our bathroom didn’t look nice anymore, but it was still possible to touch up. However, it’s not little work. Congratulations on the decision!

Yes, I already thought about retro too, but it’s not my world. I know there are other people who would find it awesome, but I absolutely can’t do anything with the colors. :D I find chalk paint nice again, though. Which brand can you recommend? Do you need to apply something on top to make it last?

a) Painting and foiling change the appearance, but in my opinion, not for the better.
b) Vinyl is no problem. Just please don’t splash too much water so it gets under the vinyl.

As long as the bathroom is functional, I would just leave it as is. Maybe a new showerhead or a new toilet seat. That’s about it.

You can usually connect a washing machine or dishwasher to the sink connections – water and sewage. Remove the tall cabinet, put the washing machine there. You’ll have to see what kind of drain you have.
The hoses are connected to such nipples.

The faucet can probably be unscrewed and another faucet screwed on. Something like that.

The sink has to go, otherwise a washing machine won’t fit underneath, right? Remove the cabinet door, possibly a shelf or whatever else is in the way, and slide the washing machine in. Possibly shorten or leave off the baseboard. The connection isn’t rocket science, it’s been shown already. If necessary, take a photo and just show it cluelessly in the hardware store :)

I would paint the tiles on the wall and bathtub. A film is a huge effort because it’s not a smooth surface.
The bathroom will have to be renovated anyway later, so there’s no need to be afraid of mistakes.
Get a new toilet once from the hardware store.

I would leave the floor as is and just put down a floor mat. Once the wall and tub are, for example, white, it won’t stand out so much anymore.
If you put vinyl or something like that on it now, it will look unfinished, the wall joints aren’t nice, etc., just ragged (vinyl is also the last thing I want to feel barefoot, but well, matter of taste).

If you paint the wall tiles light gray, for example, the floor could even look okay. Clean well once with the steam cleaner, then you don't have to feel disgusted either.
