Well, some kind of roof has to go on there, but you can forget about using your cold roof as storage space for 99% of household items. A cold roof is like a garage. You can't store fabrics or delicate things there. Only tires, bikes, and tricycles – but you don't want to carry those up the stairs.

Before you plan the stairs, I would check whether there is actually standing height where they arrive, or what pitch you need for that. I think you already have a general contractor model that you don't want to deviate from. What is the roof pitch there?

By the way, we had to pay an extra charge for the cold roof to be fully walkable (we have a hip roof – that was very manageable).
