Dear forum,

Our offer includes tiles of the above size priced at 30 euros / m2 including installation. Our general contractor has also openly mentioned that many builders choose a larger format. This would be significantly more expensive due to a second worker, more difficult installation, and more material. I am now wavering daily between "you don't have to follow every trend" and "maybe I will regret the small formats for the next 40 years."
My parents-in-law have installed a relatively new bathroom with this size which we like. We have planned the hallways, the foyer, kitchen, and bathrooms with the tiles. Different tiles are not an option for us.

Would you please share your experiences and feedback?

That depends a lot on the style of the house, the layout of the rooms, and the furnishings. You can't say that in general. My cousin had 80 x 80 tiles laid everywhere on the ground floor and it doesn't look good everywhere, because the large formats lose their elegance when cut. In the hallway and bathroom it looks - I think - really bad.

It is probably like in real life: size is not everything and is transient. We were at the large tile store today, and I had the impression that the previously displayed giant tiles are now rather placed in the back area. Of course, we only install something that we LIKE NOW, but at the same time, we are also aware that the next trend is already on its way. Although we currently have 60x60, I still find 60x30 a nice format. Ultimately, the height of the additional cost is decisive, and if I can perhaps afford a nicer staircase, shading, lighting, or something else instead, I would most likely compromise on the tile format.

Thank you for your quick and helpful assessments! :)

Are there any rules of thumb to follow, or is it simply decided by the eye/gut feeling?

The seller has rules of thumb, the tiler too, and the most important one is your taste. It’s like in the furniture store, some things are just preferred, they say.......... but I usually don’t do it that way. You would probably need to provide concrete information, but I think a beautiful bathroom can be designed with most formats and colors.
