A loaded topic, so I originally opened a about it :)

We have lived in the USA for the last 10 years with a short break, before that a few years in Switzerland. You could say that I have spent almost my entire life abroad after my studies. For private (family) and professional (less travel) reasons, however, we are now back in Germany. Our considerations began before Corona but were reinforced/accelerated by it.
From today's point of view, I would like to start building quickly, preferably yesterday. On the one hand because we don't have a social network in Germany, except close family who are also scattered. That means renting somewhere now and then building somewhere completely different is "lost" time in that respect. Regarding the age of our children, the older one will finish primary school in 2 years and the younger one will start primary school simultaneously, another reason to start immediately. Besides that, I am also a really impatient person and find it annoying every month to keep paying our 2k rent ;)

If we find something suitable, it just can't go fast enough. We definitely don't want to artificially wait somewhere else anymore, as it would then be quite late. It would be optimal to find a plot in our current region, where we are already familiar (and which is also my childhood home), but that is much more unlikely than if we spread the net much wider. At least in this respect it is an advantage to have hardly any existing connections.

I have already seen your other thread - although not read through it - and also responded in it containing a note about my availability.

Wow, 2k rent does not speak for an inexpensive area of the interim quarters. I read scattered family as a hint of having family connections in several places – then how was the location of the property in question here chosen?

It is within the extended radius, meaning it can be visited in about 1.5–2 hours. As mentioned, this is not a must-have but a plus. However, we have many other criteria by which we filter and prioritize. Distances to the nearest town and city, schools with suitable focuses, and ideally universities within a reasonable distance, an accessible larger train station on the main ICE lines, an airport not impossibly far away, internet must be usable. There are also some exclusion criteria, for example, a power plant right in front is a no-go. So we have a framework by which we evaluate. No property will be perfect in every aspect; this one fits some criteria quite well.

But then you can't realize it without a driveway. Have you looked at my suggestions? You are still far from the northern building boundary.

Yes, that was in relation to your suggestion which already shows them almost side by side. :) I like it too, from my point of view you just have to look at how large the distance (and slope) between the house and the garage actually becomes. We would want to keep it as small as possible. In the USA, the "attached garage" is almost standard, which we liked about our house there. I’m also quite happy with our carport in the rental house here, it’s attached next to the house. The farther or more stairs between the car and the front door, the less our preference. But it doesn’t have to go as far as making it a single unit.

In Germany, US upper-class movies and series are consumed in pathological doses, so the car absolutely has to be taken to bed here. The dog is more likely to sleep outside than the car. willma!
