With cable, a lot depends on the segment you are connected to, such as overbooking or return path interference. Often, the only help is to ask neighbors how it works for them, which only reflects the current situation. The future can offer both: further segment overbooking or segment expansion.

With a hybrid connection, you have to consider the location of the router. The utility room is often not the best place for mobile reception. This should be taken into account when wiring the house to have different placement options.

We used to have a 16 Mbit line from Telekom. It always ran reliably. But it simply wasn’t enough bandwidth when 5 people were online. We then switched to Kabeldeutschland/Vodafone. 200 Mbit. The download is also great. BUT the upload is terrible.... sometimes under 1 Mbit and the ping is not exactly great either. I especially noticed the upload when accessing the NAS via Nextcloud.

It’s also always a question of the time of day and how many neighbors have also switched to cable.

In the new building there is fiber optic directly to the house. And I can see the fiber optic distributor from the living room

yes, I am also in BW. We also have Telekom laid and an empty conduit in case fiber optic comes. I know many who (like us) have no problems with Vodafone.

The quality of cable internet is, as others have already written, a matter of luck. I myself have no problems at all (250MBit with Vodafone, 1Gbit available). 100% or even more is always available. One residential area away, only problems.

Regarding your side question: Study the O2 website carefully. Somewhere it says in very small print the possible speed at your address. I had the same problem. 50 MBit available and 3-4 steps further it suddenly said, "Only 16 MBit can be provided at your connection."

That is - unlike with DSL - almost completely irrelevant how far away it is. ;)

I wouldn't say that... if it's too far away, it could be that exactly your house is no longer connected because it's not worth it :p

My experience: Unitymedia/Vodafone generally "more" outages and worse service (compared to Telekom (and yes, it can still be worse")). At our place Unitymedia in NRW and my customers who have it (but all business connections with 400/500MBits down and 20-50 up) in recent years ~3 long outages with hours to days! long failures, Telekom only one outage (just under a day long).

But if I could get cable, I would never choose hybrid. Hybrid is in my opinion less reliable and more complex / difficult regarding router location (possibly an external antenna required?).
