The house is about the same construction year as ours, just a bit smaller. We have upgraded everything energetically to KfW 70 standards with a heat pump. Apart from the economic perspective, in my opinion, the living comfort is much better than in the previous uninsulated houses where we rented. You have to roughly plan for 200 to 300k euros nowadays. Be sure to coordinate the measures with an energy consultant beforehand. You can save some money or forgo some funding if you can do a lot yourself. Insulating the basement ceiling is easy; it only cost us 1000€ in materials.
That was the only reason we didn’t tear down the old shack. Typically, there are still beautiful solid wood doors and wooden stairs from that era. Maybe even timber framing. Here and there it creaks, but it doesn’t bother us.
I did (I’m not flipping back) recall that it was initially also said that one should consider whether to bring everything to a new-build condition or live in a modernized charming house.
