What do you mean by that? The "only" referred to the area in comparison to the other rooms to emphasize that even with this size the ceiling height suits us well. I did not mean to imply that the room is small or inappropriate for a guest room. And half of that would be enough.

That was fun.

I find your rooms very magnificent in terms of size.
Here, it’s just pure envy [emoji4]

Since the topic fits so well here (and with the last post from 21.2.18 it might not yet be considered grave-robbing), I would also like to put a "problem" on the topic of ceiling height vs. size up for discussion. So far, I have only been a silent reader; if this does not fit into the topic here and I should rather create a new thread, please let me know. The cases described so far in the thread were new builds, but in my case, it is about the renovation of an existing residential building from 1962.

In the currently architect-planned design (which we like very much overall), there is supposed to be a large living/dining/kitchen area on the ground floor, with a total area of ~44m² for living + dining and an "L-shape" 11m² kitchen (see floor plan excerpt). The clear room height after the renovation (new floor structure/underfloor heating...) will still be about 2.45m. On the south side, there should be a large window, actually spanning almost the entire width to the terrace (subject to feasibility/financing).

We are now discussing again the ceiling height and whether the room might feel oppressive at the planned size or if it is suboptimally illuminated due to the windows being at the “short” ends. Although there is a large opening on the south side.

What do you think? Is a ceiling height of 2.45m okay for this room size? Since it is an old building, the ceiling height itself cannot be changed; however, the creation of an "air space" by removing the ceiling in the dining area (about 4m x 3.5m) is being considered (including a two-story glass facade). In principle, that would be possible given the overall size of the house, but my wife would actually prefer the room on the upper floor with a south orientation.

I would definitely go higher as well, 2.45 is quite low. We have 2.60 for medium-sized rooms and that fits.

2.45 at 40 m2 feels very oppressive, I think. The feeling is further intensified by the room size.
