If partner, job, and living situation fit, of course you can start in your mid-twenties, no question. But that is becoming increasingly rare these days. My wife, for example, had to drag herself from one fixed-term contract to the next for years. You don’t start a family like that, and you certainly don’t build a house. Before you know it, you’re in your early/mid 30s, and if it doesn’t work right away, you’re in your 40s at the first child. We live opposite a [Kita] and I see the mothers dropping off their children there in the mornings. I would guess that for 50% of them, the number 4 is already in front. So it doesn’t seem that unusual to me anymore nowadays.

I am now in my mid-30s with the children and that’s going quite well (as I said, I can still imagine having one more) but the grandparents are already (children 3.5 years and 4 months) not doing so well health-wise and probably won’t be around forever, which I just find unfortunate for everyone involved. I guess I will try to convey to my children that during college (if you attend one, of course) is a good time for children. Some of my fellow students did that and in my opinion it has almost only advantages…

So I was almost 27 when I gave birth to our daughter. A few months before (already during the pregnancy) I successfully completed my Master's degree. My husband is a teacher and had just finished his traineeship six months ago but was still employed on a temporary contract. Our daughter will be 2 this summer and starting in August I will begin a regular vocational training because unfortunately I can’t get anything with my degree here. My husband is still employed on a temporary contract. Nevertheless, our house construction will start sometime in the next few weeks. It will surely be exhausting but we will manage and I will be glad to have completed family planning and house construction by the time I’m 30.

Keks, you can't say that so generally. The parents of my daughter's friend are struggling with having had children during their studies. They both still need practical hours that are barely compensated, and at the same time they have to work so that money comes in. Both end up with over 40 hours per week spread over 6 days. Without financial resources for babysitters, cleaners, and the like. The organizational effort to manage everything under one roof would drive many families to the brink of despair. Grandparents can't always step in either, they are still working or live in Argentina.

I have two children (10+5), a fixed-term contract, and have bought a house. All alone (without a husband). Ask me again in 10 years.

That is not unusual at all in academically oriented areas. By the time one has studied and perhaps completed a doctorate, one is often already 30. Then one establishes oneself a bit in the profession and before you know it you are 35 before seriously considering children. By the time it really works out, the 4 is quickly at the front...
