First of all, I wish you success with the adoption, Nicola. The question of the house size naturally depends on the desire to have children. Either there are no children, or there are many - friends of ours surprisingly had twins at the end. In Germany, we always think that you build only once and then stay in the house. That is not a rule, because you can sell the built house later and buy another one that fits a new situation. So whoever starts with a few rooms too many has no problem downsizing later. We have 2 children (1999 and 2001) and bought our terraced house near Düsseldorf in 2001. Infrastructure was important. The boys are grown up now, and we are moving to the countryside and building. The requirements have changed and are being implemented architecturally accordingly. The terraced house cost a little over 500K DM. According to the latest inquiries, you now get about 400k € for that - we ourselves are surprised. In England, for example, they talk about the "house ladder," where using and selling depending on requirements is quite common. Seen this way, we are much more flexible than we think. Building a little too big can be corrected; you just do it again and differently.

Yes, family planning and also the possibility of failure are somehow tabooed just like the fact that people die, some earlier, others later.

Of course, I also know couples who bought a house only to find out that it doesn’t work out.
One of them managed to have a child in old age with all the tricks of medicine.
Result --> Both quite unhappy and no time / no desire for the child. In reality, they had become too accustomed to the DINK lifestyle.

Not only the case that it doesn’t work out at all completely surprises couples.
Also the fact that children don’t arrive on demand as ordered comes as a surprise to many.
For example, it is planned that the second child would be just right at Easter when a big vacation is over and one has settled into the new job. Before that, it would be inconvenient, so contraception is used.
Then the child suddenly arrives years later and the firstborn is already starting school...

It is somehow a mixture of arrogance and simply lacking information.
Also, the frequency of miscarriages seems to become a topic for many only when it actually happens.

So I think it is good that such topics are openly discussed here.

well, and others again trust that with the second child it will take just as long as with the first. Then you just give the woman a funny look and now we are sitting here counting the last days and the house is not finished Nevertheless, we are very much looking forward to the few months of being cramped together as four. We can also understand what it is like when not everything goes according to plan, as the beginning was also quite bumpy.

So we planned the second children's room, but number 2 is somehow faster than the house is finished now. Life is not plannable and the more you try to plan, the more likely it is to go wrong. But existing rooms can always be used differently, nonexistent rooms cannot.

Therefore we still have one room in reserve, actually only intended as a hobby room

We have taken that into account in our house planning, there are indeed some relatives without children or involuntarily with only one child. We will still include the rooms in the plan, my husband is already talking about a model railway room...

Built with 1 child, 2 were planned. We are now 4. When my wife started doing sports, I suddenly panicked thinking 3 was on the way. We would have no space for that! Fortunately, only her body changed due to sports.

We planned for 2
We have 1
If no more come, it's also fine; if 1 or 2 more come, they are welcome. The expansion reserve is still enough for a few children
