The situation only made it somewhat better. Most people understood that renown, charisma, and statement don’t come from the square meters to be maintained, but from other, smaller things. Such a huge house just costs maintenance, whether in the countryside, city, or somewhere in between. Look around at urban properties. There are still very nice houses that make more of an impression and have more to tell than one of those creepy villas you used as an example. Sorry, sounds harsher than intended. It would be nice if you find something where you feel comfortable. But doing that so much at the expense of the general public and the environment hurts my environmental soul a bit (and always brings me back to the unanswered question of why people with children apparently, on average, deal much more carelessly with material and the environment than singles/people without children.
