I took a look at the sun path page... it's true that it might be significantly better in the summer since the shadow is shorter then, but on the neighboring property there is more moss than grass, and the other plants are also mostly shade-loving species.

Nowhere in the garden is it basically dark when the sun is shining. Not even in the north. It's just different: diffuse light.

As I said, it could well be that there's less shade in summer, but since the garden is flat and there's a wall against the slope at the east end, that will probably additionally favor shading. Shade definitely has advantages too, but I think the adjoining living room will also be gloomy because of it, especially in autumn/winter.

We also have the garden facing east and additionally a lot of window space facing south. To the south, exactly 6.60 m away, there is a flat-roofed house that is 6.60 m high, and we already have partial southern sun in the house. In summer, it shines in all day, so we have to provide shading. From early afternoon, then from the west. And in the garden, you can always find a sunny spot with us. Only in the afternoon, around 2-3 p.m., does the sun disappear behind our own house, casting the terrace into shadow. In the evening, however, there is sun at the back, eastern end of the property. It's not dark at all!
