Old timber-framed houses are found everywhere in Germany. The wood is also exposed to the weather.

Aside from that.
Lucrezia, do you really want to always see wooden walls, wooden floors, wooden ceilings?

Apart from the appearance, which might be cozy on vacation but unbearable for me in the long run, the U-values of a log cabin are so abysmal that I would not consider it.

That doesn't necessarily have to be the case; the wall must have a certain U-value to get approved. And there are indeed multi-layered wall constructions with very good U-values, up to passive house standards. Likewise, the interior walls can be clad; it doesn't all have to remain in wood look.

Log cabins for me are houses made from logs - without anything else - like the old alpine houses or, if you prefer, even squared off. In any case, solid from one piece.

Cross-laminated or screwed solid wood panels have a multi-layered structure and yes, that goes up to passive houses and without visible wood. I myself have such a passive house.

yes, of course that's possible, but in my opinion it's like putting the cart before the horse (basically an encased timber frame house). A pure log house barely reaches a U-value below 0.5.

Wood needs some maintenance. This also applies to normal facades, and the magic word is "constructive wood protection". Our neighbor had a log house built with a 1m roof overhang all around. On the south side even 1.5m to reduce solar radiation in summer. He can look outside while we have to keep the shutters down.

The U-value alone says nothing. You probably think "low U-value = little heating = little money spent." But it’s not that simple. You have to like wooden constructions – I’m not one of them either – but why dispute someone’s taste?!? Our neighbor covered several interior walls so he could wallpaper them and reduce the amount of visible wood. It’s his decision – he wants to live with it and no one else!
