Is a TAE socket still needed nowadays?

Those are two completely different things.

Today, you only need the TAE socket in the utility room (handover point of the provider). From there, everything can be connected via LAN cable or wireless.

A simple current FritzBox (or another manufacturer) is connected to the TAE socket in the utility room, and then a proper FritzBox (better Wi-Fi network + DECT signal) is installed in the hallway, which is connected to the other FritzBox via LAN.

Alternatively, you can set up a mesh system and extend the telephone signal with DECT repeaters from the utility room.

Most phones today only need a charging station, and the rest works wirelessly.

That's how it looks. Fiber optic is hardly available even in the Telekom capital.

The frustration about the copper cable in the new building has eased a bit - technician was here, ordered 250 mbit down, measured 270 - so that fits. Up only 40, I still have to check that. We took a bit of a risk and completely did without Sat/coaxial cabling etc.
