We just had a copper cable laid into the house. I am building a new house in the German capital and I am getting copper laid into the house. That’s all you need to know about digitalization in this country.

Before, I lived in a rather underdeveloped country – there the fiber optic cable came out of the wall. 500 Mbit? No problem.

In the city where Angela Neuland has her office, that's surely a matter of honor *LOL*

Yes, in Germany's second largest city that apparently is not uncommon either... we don't have fiber optic either!

Of course, fiber optic would be great, but I don’t find it so unusual that copper cables are still being installed. It all depends on the existing infrastructure. If only the old copper network is available in the area, new buildings will simply be connected to it. If I remember correctly, Deutsche Telekom has been developing new residential areas with fiber optic since 2016. Everything developed before usually received copper. If you build a new house in an area that was originally planned with copper, you will still get copper there today.

It can get worse. We are building in the Telekom capital and in one of the top neighborhoods. Telekom’s statement: We can’t say the speed yet, in the worst case 16mbit. Fiber optic would have cost us 20k €. Cable as well. So we are gambling. The street around here is connected with 250mbit. But a plot of land behind us, similar to ours, only has 50mbit... We’ll see.

I am moving from a smaller town into a nowhere place (because the plots in the town are becoming too expensive), and in our rental house in the small town we already have fiber optic coming out of the wall, and in the nowhere place it is already lying in the freshly plastered utility room, looking at us full of anticipation.
I didn’t even commission Telekom for that; we had fiber installed by another company.
