So I used to think that too. Own house, then we’re out of the Ikea phase. Uh, yeah.
Position 1: Wardrobe (already bought here for the current rental house):
Nothing decent to be found in furniture stores under 800€. And then I don’t even have a spacious closet.
Conclusion: a 150cm Pax with mirrored doors, at least I can fit all jackets and coats in there and still have drawers for hats etc.
Position 2: Living room/TV furniture – in planning
1. In furniture stores, what we want costs at least 8000.- if not easily five figures right away.
Also, the known manufacturers (Hülsta etc.) don’t have cabinets only 20cm deep. But I don’t need more for CDs/DVDs.
Conclusion: we’ll probably end up at Ikea again, Besta in this case.

I don’t see why I should spend the equivalent of a car on a cabinet system.

Eket warmed my heart right away. I’m telling you 30€/85€. That’s also why it took 3 years, because...

... I don’t set a limit, but I don’t pay for outrageous prices. I wouldn’t be happy with the piece if it’s f***ing expensive and I have to look at it every day. I’m different from others in that respect. I think it’s great when there is a great price/performance/design ratio. That’s why my kitchen is also free of ridiculously expensive kitchen appliances.

By the way, my display cabinet without glass was ridiculously expensive too, but a one-of-a-kind piece (design!). Hardly fits anything, comes from overseas (it even smells like it), but looks delicious to watch. For bedside tables that need to hang, my only requirement is that there’s space for my books, phone, glasses, and medication.

What I like about Ikea are the smooth straight lines of many things: Malm, Besta, Eket...

It’s just totally different. When I had to buy a new car, I didn’t even look at it when picking it up. The poor salesman was desperate because of my lack of interest. My husband took pity and had everything shown to him while I was on the phone with my sister. But with furniture, it’s exactly the other way around. They last much longer than the boring car. Such beautiful wood with elegant surfaces and smooth functions – that’s where I soften.

That would be too little for me today. In the garage, something like that might be enough - although actually not there either. Much too slapdash. My husband also brought such a collection of cheap cabinets into the marriage. Little by little, they all got thrown out. They all broke anyway. My real wood wall unit in the living room is now 20 years old. Nothing has broken on it. There have already been considerations that it lasts too long because maybe you want something new at some point. But I still like it.

No question, real wood can be very beautiful! I have a few pretty old treasures, unique pieces indeed. Only the "wall unit" we want neutral and white in between - and for that I don't need real wood under the paint.

We have high-quality kitchen appliances - but that also has to do with my husband's job.

Apart from that, we are not poor, but certainly far from rich, and it's simply not enough to ALWAYS choose the best and most expensive. Although you should also ask yourself whether expensive is always the best, and whether you want a piece because of its function, its appearance, or its name.
