How is the construction boom? Still there?

yes, that was my world, mid-80s, I was a single parent, receiving no child support from the father, had a well-paid job, and paid off my place relatively quickly. Interest rates were high, I paid off 3% plus special repayments. After 12 years I bought my second property. However, I didn’t go on vacation three times a year, (expensive) mobile phones didn’t exist back then, my car was new and paid in cash. People owned less, no LED bling-bling in the kitchen, no Wi-Fi with all that comes with it, etc. Sure, the houses were not insulated, but heating costs did not cause a big dent in the wallet, everything was moderate in the times of Chancellor Kohl.

I see it the same way. No way would I put myself in a position of dependence on friends and acquaintances. If they don't work the way I want, you can't complain and have to accept what you get. Well, a village life would be a nightmare for me anyway. As a student, I had to experience the cozy village life on many weekends, no thanks, the gossip and being watched by others – that's not how I imagine a pleasant life.

The thing with the village and helping/being helped is just a matter. Personally, I really wouldn’t want to live in the city again. But that depends on personal preferences. Whether you have the chance to get help from many friends who are craftsmen also always depends. I suspect that many people nowadays don’t live where they grew up. As a result, you rarely have friends in the trades who are regularly available. And honestly: you are then also in a bubble. Home builders often have a certain income that cannot be achieved in the "Gesellen" trades. So you find yourself in different circles. Becoming dependent is also a matter of opinion. Yes, maybe you "have to" help friends then. But that doesn’t exclude spending time with family. You take them along, after the work is done you have the time together. Especially smaller children have an incredible amount of fun with construction sites. And it’s not as dangerous as it’s portrayed. You spend time with family and friends on the construction site. That is often overlooked. Personally, I helped very regularly with two builds. That makes a huge financial difference. If I can save 100k by helping other friends, that’s a real gain. Socially and financially. I can also understand if other people have different priorities in life, but then I don’t accept the argument about how expensive everything has become.

Steimker Gärten and Hellwinkel Terrassen are only half built. The biggest difference is that almost everything there is multi-family houses with condominiums or rental apartments. Only a few row houses - and those all seem to be occupied. The last residential area with single-family houses must have been Kleekamp in Fallersleben, and despite the prices, the sale of the plots went very well.

The first construction phase of Steimker Gärten is completed. And Fallersleben was also some time ago; today it would run differently. The condominiums in Steimker Gärten still all have old prices despite changed interest rate conditions. Many of them will remain empty for years...
