You don’t have to prepare for a battle, and should avoid, as an amateur, working ahead of a professional.

Keep in mind (unspecific which software one uses) that all those amateur planning programs are actually only suitable for presenting and discussing finished plans; for creating plans, however, it remains indispensable to master planning yourself (and then you don’t need any clicky-color stuff for the conception and sketching).
