Any ideas for redesigning the staircase?

I think the staircase is already pretty good for a standard staircase.

I don't find the staircase bad either, I've seen worse. In white, it doesn't look as bulky, the steps could be painted in color. In the end, it is the surrounding room that makes a big difference. Of course, you can have nice staircases built, but then you quickly reach 12,000 to 20,000. However, then you have many options. Our staircase stands in the middle of the room, so we spent money on it; this staircase is basically inside a box, which would bother me less. Wait for a while........

If you have little space, I would consider closing the steps and installing a cabinet, drawers in the lower steps, or something similar underneath to gain additional storage space. The rest will be difficult. For anything that has to be done afterwards, the question arises how much has to be dismantled or even destroyed and repaired. Maybe move in first and see how much it still bothers you after 2-3 months and the corresponding settling-in period.

Yep, closing the steps plus base cabinet is definitely under serious consideration. Yes, you are right. The sexiest conversions are (for us) not affordable and are not proportional to the price.

We have EXACTLY this staircase. It is just not our hallway shown in the photo. I don't have a photo at the moment.
