Hello,

I would need your help and opinions.
We are building a bungalow with 115 sqm of living space.
It will be an L-shaped bungalow.
Our plan was to completely cover the terrace with the hipped roof of the bungalow.
This would create a terrace measuring 5.00 by 4.60.
The orientation would be southwest.
The living-dining room with almost 35 sqm faces the terrace.
The room has one window or exit to the terrace measuring 1.80 by 2.13 and another exit of about 0.80 by 2.13 m.
Additionally, to the west, there are two windows each measuring 1.00 by 1.26.

The architect has now suggested in the preliminary planning to design the roof as a hip gable roof for aesthetic reasons.

Then, the terrace would only be covered to 2.75 by 4.60.

To me, that is almost too small or I found our first idea more practical in terms of usability for parties, etc.

My partner suddenly has fears that with our first option too little light will come into the room.
Is that really the case? I would need your help with that.
All acquaintances so far have said, take the large terrace.
It’s difficult, it’s supposed to be for life.

Regards, Daniel

Unless the floor plan surprisingly tells me otherwise, I see it the same way.

Even here, I would first clearly say yes in principle, a visual impression can still influence that. If I understand correctly, the terrace area is supposed to be 5.00 x 4.60 m and with it the floor plan virtually rectangular; and if it is only roofed over to a depth of 2.75 m, the roof follows the angled shape of the "actual" house.

I see no problem in temporarily compensating the disputed difference of 2.25 m with an awning – or also permanently with a glass roof.

This way, the angled bungalow also gets an angled bungalow hip roof, the living-dining room will not be darkened, and a larger table group will still not get wet. All good, right?

If it’s forever, I would prefer the bride even more than the wedding guests.

Well written, that was already worth the registration.

But is it really true that it gets too dark? Isn't the south side generally already relatively bright, so that light still shines under the terrace into the 2 large floor-to-ceiling windows?

The exterior appearance regarding the roof is nice but not the most important thing.

No, it cannot be bright enough. A 5m shade roof is as dark as a bear's a...

I am starting to believe that too.

But if I imagine a 25 sqm room, like my terrace, with half of it being a glass front, then the room would be bright as day, and that wouldn’t shine into the other room?

Just an example, of course it has nothing to do with reality.

I just want to be one hundred percent sure for my conscience, so I don’t regret it.
