I have personal negative experience with Whirlpool appliances and, due to the many new Electrolux appliances that have been available since 2010 or 2011, still bought all kitchen appliances at IKEA. In my opinion, the bad reputation comes from the Whirlpool appliances.
My experience:
- Refrigerators and microwaves are still mostly from Whirlpool
- The ovens (the Framtid ov9,10 with the same front) are from Electrolux, I am very satisfied with the OV10
- I am also very satisfied with the cheap microwave Framtid MW3, although it is Whirlpool
- There are no problems with the induction cooktop Framtid h1n4t (Electrolux)
- I am very dissatisfied with the refrigerator (Whirlpool) (fridge-freezer combo, which has not been in the catalog since 2012 and was replaced by a visually identical successor). The thing is simply too loud and the technician comes with a sound level meter instead of replacement parts and talks about tolerances. At IKEA, exactly this device was exhibited in an open living-sleeping-kitchen area, although it would be impossible to sleep next to the refrigerator every day.
- I am very satisfied with the dishwasher (Renlig DW60)
You can also get other brands at similar prices online, but 5 years warranty is definitely a strong argument. In my experience, IKEA has the best price/performance ratio for built-in cooktops. Normally, you can install almost any third-party appliances in IKEA kitchens, only with refrigerators and built-in microwaves it can sometimes be problematic enough that you have to adjust the fronts. This is not easily doable with every front design. With flush fronts (e.g. Nexus), every hardware store will do that for you without problems.
For dishwashers, the fully integrated ones are clearly advantageous in my opinion. If the appliance breaks down, any fully integrated 60cm dishwasher from nearly any manufacturer fits as a replacement. You don’t have to worry about whether the front panel or buttons match the design or if the top panel has a different height. They also look better visually. Also, with the laser pointer light on the floor, you can see the operating status, and you always turn on the dishwasher after fully loading it, so it doesn’t matter that you can only operate the buttons when the door is open.
In the past, built-in cooktops and fully integrated dishwashers were about 200 EUR more expensive without reason than normal cooktops or dishwashers with control panels, because customers were willing to pay for the aesthetic/planning advantage. But IKEA has set a standard here; I would never plan a semi-integrated dishwasher in a new kitchen.
