My tip here is also - ask and visit friends and relatives with children. No person without children can even remotely imagine how much stuff children have and how much parents need for their children. A house without children must/can meet completely different requirements than a house for a family.
That means first and foremost storage space!!! and strategically placed areas along the usual living paths where things can be put down or are within reach. And space to move. Our current hallway, for example, is only 1.20 meters wide right behind the front door, and we could renovate every three months because the walls are scratched and dirty. In front of the bathroom, we also have a narrow spot where the three of us regularly bump into each other in the morning.
And yes, I think children are full-fledged cohabitants whose needs should be addressed instead of thinking they will be gone again in 18 years anyway.
