Children's room in the attic planned too small?

Briefly captured the wall cabinets

A small PC workstation can be placed under the window in the hallway. Each child gets a wall cabinet, and for the parents, the slant can also be used for one.
There aren't many options, and before small labyrinths are planned in the house... ;)

Exactly like that is planned :)
There will also be other and more windows – I didn’t list them exactly now as it will be adapted depending on the design.

Regarding the question of load-bearing walls:
Good question – no idea yet. Upstairs I assume there are no load-bearing walls since it is a split roof which is supported by extra beams in the attic.
Of course, we will still discuss everything with the architect and structural engineer, but we would like to have variants ready beforehand that we can pull out of our pocket if variant A or B fails. We want to aim for quick appointments regarding payment ^^

I don’t find the children's rooms too small because the slanted areas can also be used, and if there are built-in closets in the hallway, you have to count that space as well.

Not having a bathroom on the upper floor would be impractical in my opinion, but maybe it can’t be helped.

The argument that the children's rooms shouldn’t be too big so that there isn’t too much unused space after the children move out can be seen or solved differently:

1. Renovate. For example, add an additional bathroom upstairs and/or remove walls to create more space for hobbies or similar and/or enable age-appropriate/barrier-free living. Here you could, for example, remove the old staircase and/or install a lift. That requires space but would then be available.

2. Sell. If the property is difficult to renovate in old age and no other additional use is planned, you can also part with it. If the location and condition are okay, you trade the large paid-off family home for an age-appropriate smaller apartment – done.

Best regards Dirk Grafe

Hello Dirk,

I agree with you on points 1 and 2 :) We would certainly have planned it that way for a new construction project. Meaning each child gets their 15sqm and already some ideas on how it could be practically and easily converted :)

Since with this existing property we only have the available space, it has to somehow work that way but of course also in a reasonable form :)

People will be spending time with the family downstairs in the common area anyway – currently there are more toys in the living room than in the children's room...
When the kids are older and really want to be alone in their room sometimes, I think other things are more interesting than necessarily having to build huge Lego tracks alone there...

We are considering making a kind of playroom in the attic, which has standing height for an adult in the middle. Setting up a train set or something like that and just leaving it there as long as you want :) (of course only from a certain age when the kids maybe have friends visiting and want to play alone with them without mom and siblings around)
