Our tarpaulin has served well for 20 years. Now a roof is being constructed. No building permit is needed for a tarpaulin and it is also allowed to extend into the clearance area.

It also costs only a fraction.

And below the dining table on the plan, there is also a huge window?

No one is talking about panic. I find it pleasant, just like a roofed entrance area. And if, as I described, I move my terrace to the side, then it would be nice to get there with dry feet even in the rain. From this perspective, I would never need a carport and certainly no garage, because water affects the car even less. So.....no panic - just a personal feeling. As always, there are several ways to Rome. No right/wrong, just different feelings.

We also have a canopy - but staying dry on the way from the garage to the house is simply not possible

Hehe

What kind of houses do you all have that you cannot leave the house with dry feet? Do you all have water damage in the house?
This whining about possibly getting wet. So what?! Either I calculate 10 meters to the composter or I leave it and dispose of it later. Your vehicles are also not 50 meters away from the house, but 5.
No one is forced to go onto the terrace when it’s raining. And if they do, they will survive it.

When was the last time it actually rained during the day? Here in humid Hamburg, it felt like mid-January. And if it rains cats and dogs for 30 days in June, then either your nose gets pressed flat from the inside or you dance in the rain because you want to.

If the tarp has proven itself for 20 years, why something permanent now?

I’ll tell you: nowadays people mostly leave the furniture outside. Even in winter. Also, you have pillows, decorations, and such knick-knacks outside that you can’t use if they get wet. Then also gas grills, rugs… all that should not get wet. Maybe some households still smoke on the terrace. The times when you grill in the afternoon and get caught by the rain in the evening have become very rare thanks to weather apps and can be counted on one hand. And if there is a storm, everything under most roofs less than 3 meters deep will get wet anyway. Also, you can’t do without a roof anyway because it’s part of good manners like dining and children’s bathing. Understand?

Is something else coming here, stranger?
On the west side, I recommend at least 4 meters depth.

Well, there are apparently people here who preach elsewhere about the shortest possible paths in the kitchen to "save" 1 minute and how terrible anything else would be. To each their own thing. Just admit everyone their (not to be confused with yours) truth or feeling. Clumsy exaggerations are often used in discussions but (deliberately) ultimately miss the point.
I lived for 25 years in a house without a carport or garage and everything was fine, walking distances in the kitchen against the "rules" here in the forum but that didn’t make us feel any less comfortable. I often sat, especially in the rain, under the glass roof on the terrace (sorry, dance class had rejected me) and felt great. Apparently, you would have sat there in the rain on the wet chair and felt just as comfortable, well then. We’re just different.
Today I have a very square and not how "one" is supposed to do it small porch at the entrance and find it nice, just like the fact that I can sit dry on the terrace even in the rain and even in my plush slippers.
By the way: I walk 5 minutes to my composter, I can’t imagine that 10-meter version on my ranch, sorry.
Why do you even take an umbrella? Does your body get harmed if it gets hit by 4 drops? Why close the roof in a convertible when it rains?
People are different and feel differently. Luckily. I could list 1,000 things I consider completely unnecessary or whining but a) it’s none of my business and (much more important) I don’t care at all how others do it and if they like it, then it’s fine.

Diagnosis from here: Acute drama syndrome. Has it rained too much in Hamburg today? Oh dear, how are you feeling today?
Who is this "one" you always talk about? Weather apps, smoking grills and wet cushions, is there more?

He just brewed himself a calming tea after his commanded rain dance, a little sip wouldn’t hurt you either.
