The letter to the landlord states that he is in default and therefore also has to bear the lawyer's costs..???

It is like that. The landlord was in the wrong. To assert his rights, the tenant had to go to the lawyer because the landlord otherwise does not budge. Conclusion: The landlord causes lawyer's fees and pays them. This could be litigated. But every step becomes more expensive for the landlord. Karsten

That depends on how this process develops now. If he also gets a lawyer now, there could be a back-and-forth correspondence. That’s how lawyers make money. Since he has been at fault to some extent, he will ultimately have to show insight, willingly or unwillingly. That means he has to pay your lawyer, because you were forced to hire a lawyer due to his actions. If there is no insight, proceedings will be initiated... But wait and see: often things turn out differently than optimally.

yeah yeah, the "usual" trick of lawyers who need clients. First, make the statement: "The opposing party will pay!" The opposing party often has arguments too. And suddenly, the client pays.

No "trick" by the lawyers. If a court determines 100% fault of one party (if this occurs), that party pays all procedural costs including the expenses of the opposing party. If partial fault of both parties is ultimately determined, each party pays their own expenses. The fee note of the appointed lawyer only supports the claim.
