Surprisingly, especially in the American or non-German-speaking area, the sink island is much more common than the cooktop island.

Preparing salads, preparing meat, making cold dishes (breakfast, snack, dinner), etc.… many things where I always quickly need water, whether for rinsing vegetables/meat, for intermediate cleaning of the cutting board, etc.… Just as a point to consider.

And, as a rule, better ventilation concepts can be realized with cooktops on the wall unit. Yes, now there are popular Boras and the like, but I always point out to consider how replacement procurement will look in a few years.

I also think this is great for normal fully automatic coffee machines, it is currently standing next to the sink in the rental apartment, before I had it further away. Is this your kitchen? How much space is there between the sink and the cooktop?

It’s actually similar for me, I would also say that I spend more time at the stove. Therefore, the kitchen island was not even a question for me. In the old house, I also had the sink by the window and I really like being able to pause and look outside during the dishwashing, which I don’t like very much. Besides, I mostly do that when I’m alone, and during cooking the children are usually present, so I prefer to look into the room.

I think you can’t really say that in general; everyone has to decide according to their own work processes. We prepare everything on the countertop, then rinse something if necessary and put the items to be rinsed in the sink. Or, for example, we briefly rinse salad beforehand but then prepare it on the countertop. Therefore, on our island there is neither stove nor sink. Instead, I have a nice large work surface. But we definitely spend more time at the stove than at the sink. However, that surely also depends on what kind of cooking you do.

approx. 40-50cm = practically enough to comfortably place a large plate between the hob and the sink. I have experience with another kitchen with only 15cm of space in between, which was less good for me. There it was hardly possible to do otherwise due to lack of space.

Here everyone wants to present their hammer as the problem for the nail once again.
I spend much, much more time at the stove than at the sink.
When I cook a Bolognese, I wash the vegetables for 5 minutes, chop everything into cubes for 15 minutes... and then the stuff is fried, deglazed, stirred, thrown together. Pasta cooked, etc.
Those who really like to cook elaborately, where often 3, 4 pots and pans are on the stove. They need the stove where they have the block in the living area.
Washing up, that is done later, when the guests are gone. You don’t need to look into the empty living room then.
