What I sometimes miss as a perspective, maybe less in rural areas but certainly in more urban corners: In "my" house, I can stay until my own health potentially forces me out. From a rental apartment, the owner (or the owner, aka some company) can kick me out at 83 years old. And then I certainly won't find a local alternative at a similar rental price anymore.

Of course, you won't find an apartment at that price anymore, but until then, the invested surpluses of your savings should easily be able to cover the increased rent.

But the discussion is always the same anyway, already debated countless times somewhere on the internet.

It will probably remain a classic topic until the end of humanity.

As for this "you get frail as you get older" nonsense: Sure, if from your mid-30s on you just sit on your ass at home in front of the TV after work, then in a few decades that’s it and you’ll need a walker. If you’re sporty and stay that way, you can still happily jump around well into your 90s. And by the way, also avoid the nursing home. When I look at some parents/in-laws, they only move from the bed to the table to the TV, where they sleep through the day, then back to the table, sofa, bed. Our previous owner here sold the house when he was in his mid-80s. And you have to climb 66 steps to the front door! Otherwise, I agree with Nordlys 100%. I don’t intend to leave a fortune here either, who even to. I have to make sure that when the last of us passes away there won’t be anything left to inherit, but everything was spent appropriately in time. Also a task. Until then, I just want to enjoy a real standard of living with my own house, far away from landlords and fellow tenants who annoyed me simply by renting for 35 years in over 15 apartments. That alone is worth it.

Exercise unfortunately does not protect against everything and is no guarantee to stay fit until you look at the radishes from below

I see the age, gender, education and can hardly believe the statement is meant seriously. You probably also take homeopathic remedies and think they are medicine. Yes, sports are beneficial but do not beat genetics. And wanting to happily jump around at over 90 is ridiculous.

Over 90 is exaggerated. But up to 70 you can be very fit and even easily overtake a 30-year-old while mountain climbing, who may not be as fit.

And you don’t plan that far ahead, because life is not predictable.
