Those who focus only on the land and building value forget that they don’t have to pay rent and don’t have to deal with landlords.
My (great) grandparents managed on their own in the sticks until the very end and never complained, a former neighbor, despite lung cancer, wheezed up to the fourth floor of an apartment building like Darth Vader until the very end but never moaned about how hard it was.
And since it’s now fashionable to quickly send old people to the "quarry" for pensioners and then complain about the horrendous additional fees for their care, people ruin the time until possible harder living conditions arrive, even though they don’t even know if they will reach those conditions at all?!?
No thanks!
Better to have the house where you like it now and just grit your teeth later if things get tough!

I’ve seen too many people carried feet first through the door to God's acre well before reaching retirement age. That’s why I consider it pointless to worry about what might possibly happen in 30 or 40 years with the slightest possibility within the realm of probability.

but of course, that's not a bathroom, that's a slaughterhouse *shake. But I never found anything like that beautiful, so I would never have built it like that. And if I did, I wouldn't want to change it either If I had to take over the bathroom like this now, depending on the budget, at least the upper rows of tiles would be removed down to half the height.

Very interesting discussion. For two median earners, it is already very difficult in many areas of Germany. I once checked where my income ranks and was quite surprised at how well off I actually am. I really would not have thought so.

If you don’t plan to sell the house, there’s definitely some truth to that. If you stay in the house with a herniated disc and a clear head until the grave, then only the issue of maintenance in retirement remains open.

Yes, unfortunately, I have also had to experience such cases. 53 years old, feeling bad on Friday, hospital on Sunday & funeral on Tuesday. Or 49 years old, still lively in a meeting on Wednesday, dead on Thursday.

And just for further reflection: The median I have given here (~2100€) I calculated myself from the median gross income (which is more plausible). I could not find any statistics for net income for full-time positions only, so I calculated it myself using tax class 1.

In real life, however, there is only income that one has to live on. The median net income for singles in 2017 was 1666€, for the Muster family (father, mother, 2 children) it was 3498€.

The source here is the official social reporting from the federal and state governments.
