Is a basement in a single-family house useful or rather too expensive?

The tumble dryer is out, it ruins fine clothes. Many things are not allowed in there. In winter I certainly don’t want to hang laundry outside. And next to the washing machine? How big does the utility room have to be to properly sort and hang laundry with 2 children? Then there might also be parts of the heating, descaling, ventilation? So you're at 25 m², a large ground floor is needed. And then I also have the noise from spinning.

We always have a lot of supplies at home. What is currently needed is in the kitchen/pantry. Reserve in the basement, or if something is on offer I buy more straight away. I also sometimes have 3 cartons of milk at home. Additional freezer chest also in the basement. And of course the homemade jam, etc.

Well, I also think the time will come when one will be glad to be able to supply oneself for 1-2 months if the supermarkets are ever closed.

Best prepper greetings

That is again an argument in favor of an underground cellar so as not to waste valuable vegetable garden space for an above-ground cellar replacement...

I hardly have any clothes that are not allowed, even all my blouses tolerate it. Children's clothes are always slightly dried, they are softer that way. Up to 2 machines fit on the drying rack. Suits dry on hangers. Sun, even in winter, is the most effective and cheapest stain remover. 8 sqm for sorting laundry, washing machine, dryer, hanging, sink, little cupboard.

I certainly also have food for 3 weeks. If it comes to the point that supermarkets are closed for weeks, hopefully you have a bunker or an impressive arsenal of weapons. Public order will no longer exist.

Even a 20sqm room just for drying laundry and storage is cheaper than a cellar. Not that you need one. If the world ends, you can make earth lodges. Whether you can defend your supplies then is another matter.

It depends on the property, but it could be. Only with the basement do I get an extra 100 sqm for free.

I'm just an advocate of the basement. I already loved it as a child for fitness and as a party room. And even now I certainly don't want to do without it. Maybe also a bit of Southern German thinking, here almost everyone has a basement. Although now in the current new development areas it's increasingly built without one, but that's understandable given the prices.

yes here many also say cellar is a must. Mostly stand empty.

My ancestors only had above-ground storage rooms. The potato cellar partially sank underground in the 50s due to the new road construction.
