Is a basement in a single-family house useful or rather too expensive?

... or also his very small property, a cellar can also make sense there. Although I would also prefer storage at the place of use. However, for this, for example, garages for bicycles must sometimes be allowed to be a little wider than 300 cm external dimensions so that you don't always have to maneuver the bicycles past the car, etc. The width of a property should also still allow access to the back garden on one side of the house. Etc.

I have set up a 15m2 room with tools in the basement; currently, I notice that I am moving everything to the garage because that's where screwing and repairs are done.

However, the basement is used for storage, since we might want a second child, we simply need the small furniture like the baby swing and bedside crib again. In addition, there are 20 boxes with clothes in various sizes; when I think about storing that in one room, oh dear.

And due to the hillside location, it simply made sense for us to create and rent out a 50m2 granny flat.

I love my basement!
My big workshop! Our basement is unheated but still warm enough. Lots of space that doesn’t increase heating costs. Also more garden. We have 744sqm, which is actually too little for me. I would be reluctant to give up more space.

And simply expanding a room concept by at least 3 rooms is not so easy. I didn’t like any of the floor plans of our design without the basement.

The issue of space is a good argument – but especially the garden enthusiast will not want to do without a garden shed or ground-level access to the garden tools. If it's made a bit larger, protected against moisture, and frost-free, you immediately have a small workshop...

I totally agree. And garden tools still go into a garden shed, problem solved .

Squeezing all that into the ground floor is usually a hassle. Unless you build bigger than 250 sqm... but who can do that!

Overall, it probably always depends a lot on what the property offers. We have 700 sqm and I don’t want to miss my basement. I also couldn’t have built the ground floor any bigger because of setback areas. The decision in favor of a basement was actually very easy.

In our area, building land costs between 500 and 1200 euros per sqm. So it definitely makes sense to build up or down rather than out wide.

Because you have to be able to afford paying over a million euros just for the plot without a house.

A basement is unnecessary and costs 50-60k. It's just a pile of junk that gets thrown away after 20 years and you think you'll somehow use it. 2 kids, etc., garden shed (10 sqm) and external storage room (8 sqm). Everything that has to go is on eBay classifieds. Parents have XXL garage/basement. They have to post 10 ads every few weeks because they've found some unique item again.
