The space under our stairs will get a door to the outside – there’s no risk of hitting someone in the face with it since you rarely close the door behind you in that thing (except when playing hide and seek). You had written that it’s 1.1 m wide? Generally, it wouldn’t be bad if the shelf is at least 30 cm deep so that a crate of drinks can fit across. That leaves 80 cm – probably doable. I would only decide on the window based on the view. What you should pay attention to is the precise planning of the door including the light switch. It would be annoying if the door (including the door frame) ruins the 30 cm of shelf space and the light switch can only be operated through the shelf – discuss this with the planner and have it noted. The same applies to the window.

Oh, and what do the builders do with a strip-shaped plot? A certain length of supply lines from the property boundary to the house is usually included. In our district 12.5 meters. For every additional meter you might have to pay - but not necessarily a lot. I would ask about that and accordingly plan the telecom room in the basement under the bathrooms.

I once had a storage room like that in an apartment. It had 60cm deep shelves from wall to wall on the front side, the front area was occupied with vacuum cleaner, ladder and mop. On one wall a lot of hooks, on the other 15cm deep shelves. I don't know what else one would expect from such a storage room when you have a basement
However, the window should go!

Good evening Yvonne,

The statement from the general contractor could primarily be based on the fact that the providers usually lay "only" up to behind the first house wall; rather less around the house.

Rheinische greetings

Therefore, a request to the utility providers – I would not rely on the statement of the construction manager/general contractor (possibly a generalizing salesperson)

All right, then I need to get some information. For an acquaintance who built in the area of the local utility company without a basement, it was the case that the entrance area from the street side (where the lines were also laid from) is located in the south, his connection/technical room is in the north of the house. Unfortunately, the utility company refused (according to him) to route the lines around the house to the technical room – even for an additional cost. Now he has all the connections in the wardrobe passage... I would be very annoyed... In my opinion, that's a planning error by the general contractor?!

Thanks for your practical hints

Why? The acquaintance, like any other builder, had influence over his final planning. Maybe he just didn't want to believe that it would turn out the way it did? Rhineland greetings
