Honestly, your (quite justified) objection about the floor plan and the idea of mirroring it made us think. So much so that we even questioned the floor plan that suited us.
I hereby officially apologize.
If you stick with the floor plan, personally I would prefer this arrangement:

Swap the utility room and guest room, and I would move the stairs a bit again so that the sizes fit better.
I’m not too concerned about the roof. It would look something like this:

With a closed garage it would of course be better:

I would close it for the look in that case. The most expensive part is the roof anyway.

Price-wise, it’s of course not cheap like that. Two roofs have to be paid for. A cheap carport from the home improvement store isn’t an option because of the roofing. With a single-story design with a simple gable roof, you could put a simple carport next to it. The house itself would also be much cheaper so that you would get a larger footprint for the same budget. With captain’s gables or dormers, you can interrupt the roof slopes here and there. But there will still be slopes.
