Good point. Although you can count on one hand how often we get up independently per year. But those few times are actually quite annoying (either one has a blanket over their head or is looking for clothes with phone light...)

That's right. I think it's really good that you realized that air spaces aren't so great now, but you can give the staircase some space. After all, it would be rather uncomfortable for you to go upstairs through a narrow hallway.

And you loosen that up by moving the upper floor wall a few cm (how many) away from the staircase, thus creating a kind of mini-airspace?

What if you try to create an airspace at the entrance that ends exactly at the bottom of the stairs? See sketch in the attachment.

Would that be generous or "nice" or rather out of place? I imagine a chandelier or something similar hanging down from the very top..

Loosening up stairs can also be done constructively. A folded plate staircase, for example, or a staircase without stringers with steps attached to the wall.
