We are also planning with a side entrance through the garage. Theory: Coming home from shopping by car, bringing the groceries into the house through the side entrance, partially putting them on shelves there. Children (2, 4) have muddy boots/pants; straight through the side entrance, take off the dirty clothes there and put them in the laundry basket. The hallway stays clean. Practice: No idea if we will actually do it this way. We will find out in everyday life. We are aware that it might happen that we hardly use this door in everyday life after all. We will try it out.

Show your floor plan first, only then can one discuss properly. The access to the house through the garage is often viewed one-sidedly (coming home). But the side entrance can also be practical if the garage is also a workshop or has access to the garden. Then you can easily go in and out through this entrance with work clothes. You can take off your shoes in the garage or in the mentioned utility room. For example, taking a break from DIY/gardening to go in for lunch. You don’t have to use the front door (the entrance stays clean) or the patio doors (living room carpet, parquet, etc. remain clean).

Add a sink for washing and you practically come in clean. For drinks, you have short distances, provided the utility room is used for storage. You could even install a floor drain. That makes cleaning even easier. Just off the top of my head. And whether the floor plan is liked by one or another here doesn’t really matter. I think it’s very individual what appeals and what doesn’t. It has to work.

However, you also have to plan the garage so that you can get to the door with your things between the car and the wall at all.

Whether one likes it and does it seems to be regional. In the northern German area, the side entrance through the utility room is rather common.

I did it. The garage is also used as a roof terrace. There are always pros and cons. I have to admit that the topic is not trivial: break-in, garage height, T30 door, insulation, exterior plaster...
